Apple has just announced that they will be holding an iPhone OS 4.0 event this Thursday. According to Engadget, they are sending out invitations today and the event is scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM PT on April 8. With the iPad being released just a few days ago, this is a huge announcement which should reveal the future of iPhone OS. The fact that Apple is holding it so soon is great news, the new iPhone OS 4.0 update has been rumored to contain a number of new features including multitasking.

The interface is also rumored to be getting a refresh. This would be great news for iPad users and iPhone/iPod Touch users alike. Currently the iPad interface is very similar to the iPhone and iPod Touch when you look at the home screen. The icons are laid out in a grid, with a bar at the bottom for quick shortcuts. Apple could change the interface to make it easier to navigate and perhaps offer more organization features.

The excitement is really over multitasking rumors though, it seems that it would really be a huge enhancement over the current firmware. Many applications, such as music streaming apps like Pandora, are limited at the moment without multitasking. If you are streaming music in an application and press the home button to switch to something else, it will stop the music playback because the Pandora app has no way to multitask. We will find out on Thursday what Apple has planned, and hopefully the update isn’t too far away from being released.
