Not a great day for Google Docs to fail, but it seems that it has gone down pretty hard. The real news is Facebook and Microsoft are teaming up to bring a social element to Office documents by introducing Docs.com This online version of Office will integrate with many of the social features of Facebook and it sounds like a pretty interesting idea. My brother and I are currently collaborating to write a book together and we use Google Docs, but it’s pretty basic, so I’m interested to see where this goes.

Sadly for Google, Google Docs seems to have gone down today. Here is the press release by Google:

Our team is continuing to investigate this issue. We will provide an update by April 21, 2010 6:36:00 PM UTC-7 with more information about this problem. Thank you for your patience.
The problem we detected does not affect Google Docs List. Instead, impacted users cannot access Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings, and Documents created in the new preview version.
Google Documents users can still access and edit documents created in the standard version and those using the preview version can switch to the standard version to create new documents.

I’m guessing Google Docs will be up again soon, but for the first time I think they will have a real run for their money, I’m pretty excited to see this new Docs.com.
