White iPhone Delayed Until Later This Year

Delays are not fun for anyone, and when it comes to the white iPhone 4, it has seen quite a few of them. During Apple’s press conference last week they announced that the white model would finally be released at the end of this month.

In a press release statement released by Apple today, they are still having issues making them and now they say the white iPhone is delayed until later this year. Bad news for those who were holding out for the white. At least the free iPhone 4 cases program is now fully underway.

White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

Apple Announces Free iPhone 4 Cases For Antenna Issue

The big iPhone 4 press conference to address the antenna issue is now over. During the event Apple was quick to point out that many other smartphones on the market exhibit similar issues when you hold the phone a certain way.

They went over other statistics that prove the iPhone 4 is the best they have designed despite the flaw. According to Apple a very small amount of people have the issue, or many people just don’t seem to mind that it exists. Talking about how overblown the issue is might help Apple feel better, but with unhappy customers they decided they had a better solution to the issue. So they announced a plan to give every iPhone 4 customer a free case for the phone. By using a case, the problem is solved very easily because it reduces the ability for your hand to interfere with the antenna.

The only problem is that they can’t make the bumpers fast enough, so instead they will source other case makers and offer people the choice of getting one of those if they want. People who previously bought a bumper will receive a refund for their purchase. The offer for a free case will be valid through September 30. To apply for the new cases Apple will setup a special website late next week where customers can order them. If that isn’t enough to make people happy, Apple is also offering full refund within 30 days of buying an iPhone 4.

iPhone 4.0.1 Update and iPad Wi-Fi Fix Released

It took Apple awhile to do it, but they finally released the iOS 4.0.1 update for the iPhone, and updated the iPad firmware to 3.2.1 at the same time. Both updates are available through iTunes. The iPhone 4.0.1 update has been anticipated ever since Apple first spoke about the iPhone 4 reception issues.

While the update is not a full solution to the “death grip” issue, it does change the way the signal meter is displayed. In the announcement, Apple said they discovered a flaw which caused the meter to display inaccurately. It would show a full signal when it should have been displaying one or two bars less.

The fix released today does exactly this, as confirmed by Anandtech. The iPhone 4 still exhibits the same problem where the signal will drop if you hold it a certain way, much to the irritation of many owners. With the new update applied there is at least a less significant drop in the signal meter when it occurs. Many people expect a better response to the issue during the Apple press conference tomorrow at 10am PDT. It will be interesting to see what happens because nobody is quite sure what Apple plans to do.
