“Exciting though it is to have the share price pushed up by these rumours, common sense tells us that our standard business model is an excellent way for technology companies to gain access to our technology. Nobody has to buy the company,” East told the Guardian.
Earlier today Samsung leaked ARM’s roadmap for their future products, including plans for a dual-core chip design. Based on the roadmap, ARM seems happy to offer many products for different market segments. It doesn’t seem like Apple would have much to gain from such an acquisition. ARM already offers low cost licensing and their designs can be found in the majority of mobile products available on the market today. Even if Apple was able to hold back competition, how long before another chip company would take ARM’s place? The idea that they could block competition just doesn’t seem to add up.
There is another rumor recently that Apple bought chip designer Intrinsity, so their portfolio might be powerful enough as it stands. Apple’s pattern of buying smaller chip designers and manufacturers seems to indicate that ARM isn’t really on their radar. So is Apple planning to buy ARM? Nobody really knows, but it certainly seems like it would be an odd purchase at the moment.
